As of this month (January 2017) Google is now going to add another factor into how your web site is ranked for searches – security.
This may not be an issue – does your site collect passwords or credit card information? If it does you should now have an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) installed.
SSL Certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organisation’s details. When installed on a web server, it activates the padlock and the https protocol and allows secure connections from a web server to a browser. These are usually easy to add into a site (depending upon who is hosting your site) and can be fairly cheap but need to be renewed every year. Costs can vary wildly depending on who is selling them. There are groups who are selling them and resisting the corporate urge of some retailers to make as much profit from this as possible.
So have a look at your site and see if you need it – Chrome is perhaps the best for this as it has obvious links to Google!
