TLDR: Usually not long at all, but sometimes quite a while!
But before I get into that, let me explain some jargon first.
SSL – Secure Sockets Layer – this is what gives us the padlock and security on a website (the https at the beginning of a URL) – every shopping site MUST have this and now almost every site should have this. It gives end-to-end encryption and even Google is insisting that every site has this now.
So do you need this? – YES
Is it easy to sort out? – usually yes, but not always as a recent case made clear…..
Way back we used to charge for these because it took time and effort to sort out – now it is normal practice and we include this in our hosting for our clients at no extra cost.
However, we were working with a new client and had to take over an existing site and install a certificate on someone else’s hosting. This process took 19 days ! and required:-
- Over 3 hours of staff time
- Communication over:-
- Telephone
- Support Tickets
- Live Chats
- At least 4 documents – from legal to utility bills
- Communication between 4 different companies
- Cost for the actual certificate of £150
Our Senior Developer, Daniel, thinks that he could have set this up on our hosting in at most 19 minutes!
I will point out that this is from a professional person who knows what he is doing.
If you have a problem with SSL installation then why not get in touch with Kehorne and see if, like in this case, we can dig you out of trouble.
